Feel the spirit of the ancient GETÆ come alive, more than a festival, a bridge between worlds! In the heart of the ancient lands once ruled by the proud Geto-Dacians, a sacred celebration reignites the spirit of old heroes every spring. On the evening of April 23rd, the Sacred Fire of the Dacian Knight (“Focul Cavalerului TRAC”) is lit — a powerful rite honoring the eternal battle between life and death, health and decay, light and darkness.
At the center of this timeless story stands Derzelas, the Thracian god of health, fertility, and the afterlife. Ancient reliefs depict him as a young, noble knight on horseback, armed and ready to battle the beasts of death. Sometimes he holds a palm branch, the horn of plenty, or a cup — symbols of life’s renewal and prosperity. Derzelas was revered in the lands of Thrace and Moesia (today’s Dobrogea and southern Bulgaria), a radiant, protective force of vitality. Centuries later, in the same sacred lands, another rider appeared — Saint George, the Christian martyr of the 4th century. Like Derzelas, he is shown as a knight mounted on a horse, slaying a fierce dragon with spear or sword, an eternal symbol of good triumphing over evil.
Celebrated on April 23rd, Saint George became the patron of warriors, shepherds, and farmers, protector of communities and faith. Historians and folklorists believe these two figures — Derzelas and Saint George — are mystically intertwined in the soul of the local people. The image of the mounted protector, battling monstrous forces, offering renewal and safeguarding life, seamlessly merged in the people’s imagination, where ancient deities often transformed into Christian saints while preserving their ancient meanings.
At the Sacred Fire Ceremony of “Focul Cavalerului TRAC,” the community gathers at twilight. A great bonfire is lit — a living symbol of celestial fire and spiritual purification, a tribute to the Knight of Fire who guards the gates of life. Riders dressed as ancient knights — embodying Derzelas and Saint George — circle the flames, invoking ancient blessings for health, prosperity, and the renewal of nature.
In the Gate of Transylvania, in Jiu Valley and beyond, the sacred fire becomes not only a spectacle but a journey through time: from the fires of Derzelas’ spring festivals, to the Christian feast of Saint George, to the burning spirit of the ancient Getae that still lives in every flicker of flame. The event draws from ancient traditions linked to the Brotherhood of Knights — a mystical order from Getic times, where divine twins or warrior-healers protected the world. Echoes of the Cabiric Mysteries — ancient rituals of death, resurrection, and sacred brotherhood — can still be felt during the secret symbolic feasts, recalling the myth where the slain brother is revived through celestial rites. As the night deepens and the fire crackles under the stars, one can almost hear the hoofbeats of the ancient Knights of Fire, guardians of life, riding through the ages — protecting, healing, and renewing the world once more.
