The Devil’s Waterfall
& Cascade of the Sea

Transylvania is home to some of the most breathtaking natural wonders in Romania, and its waterfalls are no exception. In this post, we’ll explore two of the region’s most stunning waterfalls: The Devil’s Waterfall near Vulcan and Cascade of the Sea in the Retezat Mountains.

The Devil’s Waterfall 😈

Located just outside the city of Vulcan in Hunedoara, the Devil’s Waterfall is a must-see for any nature enthusiast. To reach this stunning natural wonder, head towards Paroșeni and take a left turn before the first apartment blocks. From there, it’s about 3 km on a paved road. Before the final curve leading to the dam, you’ll see a path on the right that descends to the river, bringing you to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Transylvania. The waterfall is particularly impressive during the spring when the water flow is at its peak, creating a dramatic and mesmerizing sight. Visitors often describe the surrounding area as serene, making it perfect for nature walks. The attraction is also easily accessible, with bus parking just a few dozen meters from the waterfall, allowing even those with limited mobility to enjoy its beauty.

The Sea Canyon 💦

Continuing our journey through Transylvania’s stunning waterfalls, we find ourselves at Cascada Mării, located in the upper part of the Valea Mării Canyon. This waterfall is the last in a series of six, with Cascada Mării standing out as the tallest at 34 meters. Its height isn’t the only impressive feature; the waterfall maintains a strong water flow even during the dry summer months, thanks to the underground water sources beneath the southern ridge of the Retezat Mountains.

In winter, the Valea Mării Waterfalls transform into an ideal location for ice climbing, attracting adventure seekers from all over. Access to Cascada Mării is via a well-marked trail that winds through the canyon, offering a close-up view of all six waterfalls along the way. Valea Mării is one of the few places in Romania where canyoning is practiced, and it’s the only spot in the Retezat Mountains where this thrilling sport is possible. The canyoning route is equipped with self-drilling pitons and anchors for rope retrieval, making it a safe yet exhilarating experience for those who dare to take on the challenge.

To reach Cascada Mării, start your journey from Petroșani and follow the Western Jiu Valley until you arrive at Câmpu lui Neag. Look for the sign pointing towards Buta Cabin on your right, and continue along the forest road, which is accessible for any type of vehicle. After about 2 kilometers, the road curves to the left and begins to ascend. Here, you’ll find a parking area and a sign directing you to the Valea Mării Waterfalls. From the parking spot, it’s just a short 30-minute walk to reach the first of these stunning cascades.

The GIANT from the Waterfall 💪

In our tourism concept, we include expert guides, traditional local costumes, and captivating historical reenactments, offering a unique glimpse into the ancestral past of the region.

At Cascada Mării, you might even encounter the “GIANT from the Waterfall” an intriguing character brought to life by local actors, who vividly portray the legendary tales surrounding the falls. These reenactments provide a fascinating and immersive experience, blending the natural beauty of the area with its rich Geto-DACIANS History ⚔️
